Georgioupoli, Chania prefecture Crete
With a population of around 500 people this little seaside
village is about 38km southeast of Chania. It is thought that
Georgioupoli was one of the ports of the ancient city of Lappa,
the port of Amfimalla, although there are no archaeological
finds that supports this theory.
The village takes its name from Prince George, a former Governor
of the island. Although a small village it is extremely popular
with tourists and has a great number of visitors during the
summer months owing to its superb beaches.
Close by is the village of Kourna and its unique lake, Lake
Kourna, the only lake in Crete. On the southern shores of the
lake are the distinctive Kourna Caves which were discovered as
recently as 1961..
